How I’m getting out of my 26 year rut.

Bare with me

I am 26 years old and in the last three years my average income has been $11,000 a year. That is well below the poverty line any way you look at it. As a kid, I dreamed of living in a big house filled with lush furniture and modern day decor. Now, as an adult, all I think of when I see big fancy houses is “the heating bill for that place must be high.” I realized that I settled due to my income level. That my dream of living in a big house, without roommates, was unachievable. I realized that I am in a financial rut.

I have little skills when it comes to a financially sustainable career. I have 7 years of experience in commercial kitchens and just a couple years of retail experience. But, I mean, who wants to do that for a living? Though there’s always going to be a need for food, there’s no money in it unless you’re a sous chef on salary in San Francisco.

I was told a long time ago, do what you love and it wouldn’t feel like you’re working. Well, guys, that is a lie. I love food, don’t get me wrong. Cheese is a gift from the gods, but all the free cheese in the world can’t make up for the fact that my career choice is going nowhere fast. It doesn’t make up for the fact that you work yourself to the bone in a hot kitchen, sweating, cutting and burning yourself, making all kinds of dishes that cost more than what you’re making hourly. If we got paid on commission, then we would be making more money. But, unfortunately, we don’t.

So, I came to the conclusion that culinary school was a waste of my time and decided to make a career change. A big one. I am currently in my second quarter of business school at a local community college. Hopefully this time, it won’t be such a disaster of a decision.

I am 26 years old. I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up, but I know that I don’t want to be in a financial rut any more.

So, bare with me while I try to sort this mess of a life out.
